The crowd took a collective gasp, then, as Ansgar slowly got to his feet, a great cheer erupted. The other champions dismounted and hoisted him onto their shoulders, parading him around the arena for all to see.

That evening a light rain shower preceded a return to the heights by the unmarried young men and women for another night of drinking and dancing. I was hoping to find Frida, but she did not appear. Instead, I spent the evening sitting around the fire, talking, and drinking with my friends, recounting the events of the day. The older men retired to the great hall to do their drinking, singing of songs, and boasting, while their wives worked to prepare the feast for tomorrow; butchering and cooking the bull that was killed and gossiping excitedly about the events of the day and the coming wedding.
